Loxley Valley Community Farm will hold a Community Tree Planting day on Sunday 2nd December, the first of a series of events aimed at getting more people involved in the project.
Members of the public are invited to drop into the site on Rodney Hill, Loxley anytime between 11am and 3pm to help plant an edible hedge, learn about some of our native trees and have a look around the farm. There will be free refreshments available for any helpers!
The event was made possible thanks to the award of 420 trees as part of the Woodland Trust’s Jubilee Woods Grant Scheme and also a grant from the Northern Community Assembly to assist in preparing the site for public events. Other events planned as part of the public outreach programme include a Christmas craft sale on 16th December and an Open Day and Wild Food Walk in Spring 2013.
The farm suffered an arson attack in April this year which understandably set the project back however undeterred its members have worked hard to repair the damage and are now looking forward to welcoming more people to the farm as they begin their new outreach programme.
Loxley Valley Community Farm was set up in 2009 and is a community smallholding which provides members with the opportunity to produce their own food, develop a more involved community and give something back to those in need. It is 100% volunteer run.
The aims of the project are to manage a local food co-operative as a consumer-led, not for profit social enterprise, that produces nutritious and fairly priced food for its members who are drawn from Sheffield and the surrounding area. And to engage with the local community to promote the benefits of locally produced sustainable food and foster a greater sense of community through mutually beneficial agriculture.
